Health & Fasting: Fuel Your Empowered Christian Life
As children of the living God, we are called to shine His light, to shimmer as jewels in His crown. Yet, at times we may find our strength in the Spirit waning as we take heed to the temptations of the flesh. God, in His wisdom, has equipped us with all the tools necessary to overcome our natural selves and the pressures of this world, yet too often one of the most powerful and effective tools is neglected: fasting.
Fasting is not just about “not eating” for a period of time. Like praying in the Holy Spirit, the effect of fasting unto the Lord is a miracle in which God calls us to have faith. But, for many people, it is difficult to access this faith when they are distracted and even overwhelmed by the negative side effects they experience while trying to fast. These side effects (such as nausea, headaches, body aches, flu-like symptoms, and even psychological issues such as depression) are often misinterpreted as “a bad thing.” In reality, however, they are simply signs of a toxic body.
Unlike the days of Jesus when people ate a very clean diet relative to today, fasting can be very difficult for a large number of people. When one fasts, the body changes its focus from digesting food to cleansing the cells and organs. The longer one fasts, the deeper the cleanse that occurs, and the more toxic the body, the greater the side effects. Drinking fresh vegetable and fruit juices during the fast can help slow the detoxification process and assist in the elimination of toxins, as can taking certain bowel cleansing products which ensure that the toxins are not reabsorbed from the colon into the bloodstream.
It is natural for our bodies to detoxify on an ongoing basis as we are constantly exposed to toxins (and parasites) via what we ingest and via our environment, no matter how “clean” we try to live. However, the human body is not equipped to deal with the toxic overload that most people subject themselves to on a daily basis. The ramifications of this toxic overload (largely caused by over eating and poor food choices, and exacerbated by poor lifestyle habits e.g. lack of exercise) can have drastic affects on one’s physical, mental, and spiritual health. Yet, many people are oblivious to (or unwilling to fully accept) this cause/effect relationship. Not only this, it becomes a destructive cycle in that the more we eat chemical-laden, nutrient-deficient, stimulant-rich foods, the more our bodies become addicted, causing certain foods and the act of eating to become idols in our lives. This makes any attempts toward health (e.g. fasting) even more difficult to accomplish.
It is an interesting fact that when the human body is struggling with toxic overload, it employs “survival techniques” in order to minimize damage to the body’s major organs. Given that the body cannot eliminate the toxins (chemicals or substances which create irritation, inflammation, and imbalances in the body) quickly enough, and given that exposure to toxins can cause irreparable damage to the body’s delicate system, the body resorts to storing the excess toxins within its fat cells. As this storage process continues over time, the body is forced to increase the size and number of its fat cells in order to provide “space” for the ever-accumulating toxic load.
These poisonous toxins can come from what we eat, drink, and inhale through our environment. The majority of foods and drinks consumed these days contain a variety of pesticides, fungicides, fertilizers, insecticides, food additives, food colorings, flavor enhancers (such as MSG), preservatives, artificial flavorings, artificial sweeteners, hormones, antibiotics, and heavy metals. We also unknowingly inhale toxins from such things as second hand cigarette smoke, pollution, paints, hairsprays, household cleaners, etc.
Once you effectively cleanse your body of the majority of toxins and parasites (organisms that live off a “host” which can be present within, primarily, the animal foods you eat as well as certain water you may drink), fasting becomes a pleasant experience. Even the hunger pangs (which will always accompany any fast) begin to “feel” different and they dissipate a lot sooner, bringing you to a state of stillness before the Lord. The quieting of the body enables you to more richly connect with your spiritual hunger. A sense of wonderful freedom results as your flesh is forced into silence (or submission), and this sharpens your discernment of the greatest sound of all: God’s still small voice.
On a natural level, fasting is one of the biggest keys to radiant health. Our bodies cope far better with a fast than a feast. In fact, the body can function perfectly well without food for many weeks before any harm is caused, and those who fast for short periods on a regular basis find that this practice enhances their health on so many different levels. Even the initial symptom of lethargy can quickly progress to feelings of abundant energy and clarity of thought as our body embraces the experience of fasting.
Fasting (water or juice fasting; long-term fasts or a series of shorter fasts) can be the answer to innumerable health problems including (but in no way limited to) the following: weight issues, skin problems, depression, stress, addictions, low libido, and a host of illnesses and conditions that are commonly treated these days with drugs. Indeed, our Lord Jesus is the great physician and God certainly encourages us to rely on Him for our healing needs, but sometimes a healing does not come instantaneously upon calling on the Lord. Sometimes we need to seek the Lord in every way possible before realizing the victory. The children of Israel at times found themselves victorious against their enemies even before beginning battle preparations, yet other times it was not until they had made ready for war, or were even in the midst of conflict, that their wait upon the Lord was rewarded. (The actions of King Hezekiah in 2 Chronicles, Chapter 32, are a good example of this.)
God did not intend for fasting to be a dreaded chore. Fasting is one of the precious tools God has given us for strength, overcoming, seeking answers to prayer, increasing our faith, and improving our sensitivity to His Word. (Luke 5:35, “But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days.”) Yet, Satan is rejoicing because he has succeeded in tempting many of us to make choices that severely undermine our strength to fast, and even our desire to fast.
The term “full of beef and unbelief” is a worrisome reality in the lives of many of God’s children. In obedience to our Heavenly Father, we have sacrificed drunkenness, drugs, and immorality (no longer using these things to seek fleshly fulfillment), yet many of us have replaced these practices with constantly pleasing our bodily senses with food. Many foods and beverages have a drug-like affect on the body such that they become just as addicting as some other substances. God certainly desires us to enjoy the foods He has wisely and lovingly created for us, but we must be careful not to allow pleasure to become the primary goal of every meal and snack.
God designed food first and foremost to nourish our bodies, so nutrition should be our overall purpose to eating. God reminds us that our bodies are temples of His Holy Spirit with which He has most graciously anointed us (1 Corinthians 6:19-20) through the redeeming blood of His Son, Jesus Christ. It is therefore our duty to honor God by doing what it takes to bring our bodies into subjection and to follow after those things that are profitable for our overall well-being (mental, physical, and spiritual), ultimately to His glory.
With this in mind, J.E.W.E.L. Living aims to help God’s children to bridge the gap between fasting struggles and fasting joys, so they can comfortably access the miraculous power of this God-given tool. It also educates, motivates, and inspires people (for free) to transform their lifestyles so they can radiate health and vitality and, in turn, greatly influence their spiritual productivity.
While fasting and good health are by no means the answers to eternal life, they are certainly significant keys to a prosperous walk in the Lord. If you do not use all of the tools with which God has equipped you, and if you allow an unhealthy lifestyle to sabotage your physical and mental well-being, so many other aspects of your life will be adversely affected, from your desire to pray and read God’s Word, to relationship harmony, to even confidence in expounding God’s Word unto others.
“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit” (Romans 8:1), so do not let your past be an anchor to forward progression. If the Lord is leading you to recognize that you have been neglecting these areas of your life (whether unwittingly or with knowledge) then simply rejoice and move forward as best you can. As Paul the apostle so wonderfully put it, “I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:13-14). This pressing forward incorporates all things that help us to draw nigh to God and be in tune with His Spirit, and thus remain on the path toward His kingdom. It does not require perfection; it simply requires our best effort as we learn, overcome, and grow.
J.E.W.E.L. Living is not about obsession, or the complete elimination of any one particular food group. Rather, it is about balance and focusing on what makes sense for our bodies as God’s creation. Too many of God’s children are put off from seeking good health and even from fasting because of “alternative” spiritual and extremist groups that often regard these things as a religion unto themselves. But as children of the living God, we must remember that fasting and taking care of our bodies originated with the Lord. We therefore must not let those who have distorted these practices rob us of the fruit that God designed for us to enjoy.
