🍋 Effectual Fasting

Please keep in mind that this J.E.W.E.L. Living section of our website is primarily aimed at those that are experiencing difficulties with their health caused by an indulgent and perhaps sedentary lifestyle, and/or with fasting. Please take your time, enjoy, and lay hold as you feel inspired and able.

Beginning Regular Effectual Fasting

Step number four involves the beginning of water fasting unto the Lord on a regular basis, starting with shorter periods (even half day fasts) at longer intervals and then increasing at your own desired pace to a point at which you feel comfortable. The focus is not on abstaining from food, but rather on “effectual” (i.e. effective) fasting. This incorporates fasting with the mind-set of drawing near to God with the expectation of a positive spiritual result. This “result” will always be personal to the individual faster and may range from an answer to specific prayer, to a strengthening of spiritual wisdom, vision, and/or faith, to a heightened level of thanksgiving and appreciation toward God and His promises.

In no way do we encourage fasting to become a ritualistic practice. Indeed, fasting unto the Lord should be anything but a routine act. Nevertheless, because some of God’s children find fasting such a struggle and are, therefore, somewhat adverse to making the effort to use this precious tool, it’s helpful to compel yourself to overcome your hesitations by initially making fasting a scheduled part of your life.

Overcoming Fasting Struggles

As children of the living God, we are called to shine His light, to shimmer as jewels in His crown. Yet, at times we may find our strength in the Spirit waning as we take heed to the temptations of the flesh. God, in His wisdom, has equipped us with all the tools necessary to overcome our natural selves and the pressures of this world, yet too often one of the most powerful and effective tools is neglected: fasting.

Fasting is not just about “not eating” for a period of time. Like praying in the Holy Spirit, the effect of fasting unto the Lord is a miracle in which God calls us to have faith. But, for some people, it’s difficult to access this faith when they are distracted and even overwhelmed by the negative side effects they experience while trying to fast. These side effects (such as nausea, headaches, body aches, flu-like symptoms, and even psychological issues such as depression) are often misinterpreted as “a bad thing.” In reality, however, they are simply signs of a toxic body.

Unlike the days of Jesus when people ate a very clean diet relative to today, fasting can be very difficult for a large number of people. When one fasts, the body changes its focus from digesting food to cleansing the cells and organs. The longer one fasts, the deeper the cleanse that occurs, and the more toxic the body, the greater the side effects. Drinking fresh vegetable and fruit juices during the fast can help slow the detoxification process and assist in the elimination of toxins, as can taking certain bowel cleansing products which ensure that the toxins are not reabsorbed from the colon into the bloodstream.

It is natural for our bodies to detoxify on an ongoing basis as we are constantly exposed to toxins (and parasites) via what we ingest and via our environment, no matter how “clean” we try to live. However, the human body is not equipped to deal with the toxic overload that some people subject themselves to on a daily basis. The ramifications of this toxic overload (largely caused by over eating and poor food choices, and exacerbated by poor lifestyle habits e.g. lack of exercise) can have drastic affects on one’s physical, mental, and spiritual health. Yet, some people are oblivious to (or unwilling to fully accept) this cause/effect relationship. Not only this, it becomes a destructive cycle in that the more we eat chemical-laden, nutrient-deficient, stimulant-rich foods, the more our bodies become addicted, causing certain foods and the act of eating to become idols in our lives. This makes any attempts toward health (e.g. fasting) even more difficult to accomplish.

It is an interesting fact that when the human body is struggling with toxic overload, it employs “survival techniques” in order to minimize damage to the body’s major organs. Given that the body cannot eliminate the toxins (chemicals or substances which create irritation, inflammation, and imbalances in the body) quickly enough, and given that exposure to toxins can cause irreparable damage to the body’s delicate system, the body resorts to storing the excess toxins within its fat cells. As this storage process continues over time, the body is forced to increase the size and number of its fat cells in order to provide “space” for the ever-accumulating toxic load.

These poisonous toxins can come from what we eat, drink, and inhale through our environment. The majority of foods and drinks consumed these days contain a variety of pesticides, fungicides, fertilizers, insecticides, food additives, food colorings, flavor enhancers (such as MSG), preservatives, artificial flavorings, artificial sweeteners, hormones, antibiotics, and heavy metals. We also unknowingly inhale toxins from such things as second hand cigarette smoke, pollution, paints, hairsprays, household cleaners, etc.

Once you effectively cleanse your body (e.g. by doing a J.E.W.E.L. Living juice cleanse) of the majority of toxins and parasites (organisms that live off a “host” which can be present within, primarily, the animal foods you eat as well as certain water you may drink), fasting becomes a pleasant experience. Even the hunger pangs (which will always accompany any fast) begin to “feel” different and they dissipate a lot sooner, bringing you to a state of stillness before the Lord. The quieting of the body enables you to more richly connect with your spiritual hunger. A sense of wonderful freedom results as your flesh is forced into silence (or submission), and this sharpens your discernment of the greatest sound of all: God’s still small voice.

On a natural level, fasting is one of the biggest keys to radiant health. Our bodies cope far better with a fast than a feast. In fact, the body can function perfectly well without food for many weeks before any harm is caused, and those who fast for short periods on a regular basis find that this practice enhances their health on so many different levels. Even the initial symptom of lethargy can quickly progress to feelings of abundant energy and clarity of thought as our body embraces the experience of fasting.

Fasting (water or juice fasting; long-term fasts or a series of shorter fasts) can be the answer to innumerable health problems including (but in no way limited to) the following: weight issues, skin problems, depression, stress, addictions, low libido, and a host of illnesses and conditions that are commonly treated these days with drugs. Indeed, our Lord Jesus is the great physician and God certainly encourages us to rely on Him for our healing needs, but sometimes a healing does not come instantaneously upon calling on the Lord. Sometimes we need to seek the Lord in every way possible before realizing the victory. The children of Israel at times found themselves victorious against their enemies even before beginning battle preparations, yet other times it was not until they had made ready for war, or were even in the midst of conflict, that their wait upon the Lord was rewarded. (The actions of King Hezekiah in 2 Chronicles, Chapter 32, are a good example of this.)

God did not intend for fasting to be a dreaded chore. Fasting is one of the precious tools God has given us for strength, overcoming, seeking answers to prayer, increasing our faith, and improving our sensitivity to His Word. (Luke 5:35, “But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days.”) Yet, Satan is rejoicing because he has succeeded in tempting many of us to make choices that severely undermine our strength to fast, and even our desire to fast.

The very things we pray for were already accomplished by Jesus on the cross,

but they will be made manifest by our belief as vessels unto God.

 A letter from a friend…

A friend in the Lord wrote to us, so excited by what she had recently learned about prayer and fasting. Her enthusiasm is contagious, and her encouragement is scripturally sound. We hope her brief yet powerful letter will inspire many:

“I have so much on my heart. It’s all life and peace, abounding in joy. God loves us! He loves us! Some days I just can’t get past that fact…

It’s by the blood of my Savior that I have any value. It’s by His blood and the power of the Holy Spirit that His will can be made manifest in my life – and in others’ lives, through my life. Wow, this is rest! None of me; all of Him.

I want to share something specific with you that God has tidied up for me about fasting with prayer. I spoke with a brother in the Lord a couple of days ago, and before I spoke with him I thought I understood the principal of fasting and building a relationship with God. But, now I realize I was still hanging on to the “works” or laws concerning fasting as well (as per Isaiah 58). As the discussion progressed, God tied everything together for me, and now I have such a deeper appreciation for fasting. Praise God!

Now I understand that we fast only to build a relationship with God. It’s through this relationship (which incorporates no unbelief, no fear, perfect love, all authority, all power, all grace, all truth) that we now operate. We fast to build a stronger relationship with God so that whatever we pray about, whoever we pray for, whatever circumstance we come into, we can truly believe that God’s glory will be made manifest and that His will will be accomplished.

Belief can only happen through us having a strong relationship with God. We need only believe, but believing only results from a strong relationship with God. Jesus emphasized the connection between belief, prayer and fasting, and the manifestation of miracles (Matthew 17:14-21). It’s our growing relationship with our Heavenly Father that gets rid of our unbelief, and fasting is one of the many things we can do to build that relationship. Fasting puts aside our fleshly desires so that, instead, we feed the Holy Spirit within us as we hunger and thirst for righteousness (as we hunger and thirst for a strong relationship with God).

Isaiah 58:7-8 mentions fasting in order to “loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke…” so that “…thine health shall spring forth speedily…” But, we need to remember that Jesus Christ our dear Savior already accomplished all that’s in Isaiah 58. So, our purpose for fasting has changed. We no longer have to try to accomplish what is mentioned in Isaiah 58 by our own fasting efforts because it’s already done. Jesus declared it on the cross when He said, “It is finished” (John 19:30). Jesus fulfilled ALL the laws and the Old Testament with His life. He completed it on the cross!

Then, God gave us His awesome power to dwell in us, transforming and renewing our minds through the Holy Spirit anointing. And, the Holy Spirit carries the completion of everything – it’s all IN us! Every single word Isaiah spoke about fasting, Jesus fulfilled, and it now dwells inside of us through the Spirit of God! It’s simply now up to us to make this manifest throughour belief.

So, what do we do now regarding fasting? Well, we pray for others, but we fast for us to build a strong relationship with God, so that we will believe without a doubt that God’s will will be done on earth as it is in heaven. It’s a wonderful commission from God. What an awesome privilege we have! We can pray for people with His faith and His authority and see their lives changed forever. That very faith and that very authority are IN us through the power of the Holy Spirit, and fasting is one of the many ways we can help ourselves to access them. Every chain broken, every sickness healed, every captive freed, and every heart turned to God (who first loved them!). We can pray believing that God’s glory will be made manifest on the earth as it is in heaven. Ahh, it’s all so exciting!”
